This is not a new album of Germanys Metalcore heroes FEAR MY THOUGHTS but a re-release of their works "23" (2001) and "Vitriol" (2002), which were released by Let It Burn Records at that time.

Of course, you can hear many differences to their two previous records "The Great Collapse" (Lifeforce Records, 2004) and "Hell Sweet Hell" (Lifeforce Records, 2005) but "Smell Sweet Smell" is a great opportunity to get into the former records of this exceptional band. One of the trademarks of FEAR MY THOUGHTS is the combination of aggressive hardcore and powerful Metal and on "23" and "Vitriol" they already had this fine mixture.

"Smell Sweet Smell" begins with the 2002s album "Vitriol" (song 1-7) and besides "Six Billion Mirrors" and "As I Bleed" stands the pure and enjoyable Metal-singalong "Fear My Thoughts" as one of the more outstanding tracks. "23" is also a great album but it is recognizable that FEAR MY THOUGHTS were at the beginning of their career at the time of that album since it lacks of some quality here and there. The mini-LP "Sapere Aude" (released by Dioxin City Productions in 2000) was the only record before "23". But this album contains also a bunch of nice songs, especially "When Will It End" and "Word's Can't Express" witness the skills of FEAR MY THOUGHTS.

"23" is also an recommendable album for all fans because it's interesting to see the development of the band with every new record. This band was always known for diversity and musical versatility and together with HEAVEN SHALL BURN and CALIBAN, they belong to the premier bands of Germany.

So, if you have the previous two records of FEAR MY THOUGHTS and want to have their older stuff, you can lay your hands on this one because here you have two in one and altogether nearly the entire music of FEAR MY THOUGHTS.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 1996, eine junge motivierte Band namens Fear My Thoughts betritt die deutschen Bühnen und hinterlässt überall wo Sie spielen nur verbrannte Erde. Der Rest ist Geschichte. Fear My Thoughts sind schon längst kein Geheimtipp mehr, sie stellen sich breitbrüstig neben europäische Genregrößen wie z.b.: HSB, Maroon oder Cataract und haben Ihren Platz an der Seite der grossen auch verdient. Und nebenbei haben die Jungs auch noch mit Ihrem neuen Album "Hell Sweet Hell" eins der wohl besten Metalcorealben ever aufgenommen. Nun mit "Smell Sweet Smell" die noch ein letztes mal auf Let IT Burn Records erscheint ( das erste Label der Band ) hat man noch mal die Gelegenheit Step by Step die Band von klein auf kennenzulernen. Denn diese Platte ist nicht mehr als eine kleine Discographie der ersten beiden EP's "23" und "Vitriol". Und ja, es macht wirklich Spass die alten Sachen zu hören, davon können sich Bands heut zu tage noch ein paar Scheiben abschneiden. Song 1 bis 7 ist die erste EP "Vitriol", auf der schon eindeutig gezeigt wird wo die Reise mit Fear My Thoughts hingehen soll. Schneller druckvoller Metalcore mit einem gelegentlichen Hang zum New-school-HC. Und auf Song 8 bis 15 wird ein regelrechtes Metalfeuerwerk abgeschossen. Feinste Schwedendeath Riffs fliegen hier einen um die Ohren, wummernde Blastbeatattacken setzen ein und lassen wirklich nix kalt werden. Der New-school-Hc ist nicht mehr zu hören, die Jungs sind auf "23" 100%ig in ihrem Element. Ab hier ist nun defektiv klar, das die nächste Platte "The Great Collapse" auf Lifeforce erscheinen musste.

Review: Bei „Smell Sweet Smell (2001-2002)" handelt es sich um eine Wiederveröffentlichung des ersten Albums „23“ und des Nachfolgers „Vitriol“, die vom Label als eine Art History-CD veröffentlicht wurde. Musikalisch gibt es ansprechenden Hardcore, der des Öfteren an zahmere Darkest Hour oder Converge erinnert. Keinesfalls ideenlos, aber auch nicht richtig prickelnd. Die Songs, die mit Violine untermalt sind, können durch eine gehörige Portion Eigenständigkeit bzw. Wiedererkennungswert Akzente setzen. Durch dezent platzierte Riffs und hohen Melodieanteil wird die Entwicklung der Band von Song zu Song mehr als deutlich. Man nehme die Bandhymne ‚Fear My Thoughts’, die jederzeit als Referenzsong herhalten kann. Dabei kreieren die Jungs eine intensive Atmosphäre, die ziemlich düster und mitreißend zugleich unter die Haut geht. ‚A New Enlightment Must Come To Find Out What Matters’ und das drückende ‚Progression’ bilden musikalisch und spielerisch weitere Albumhighlights, die de! n Werdegang von FEAR MY THOUGHTS ausgezeichnet widerspiegeln. Natürlich muss man im Vergleich zu neueren Sachen Abzüge in Kauf nehmen, aber die Rohheit und Lockerheit der früheren Tage bietet auch ihre Reize. Wer also den Entwicklungsprozess seiner neuen Helden nachvollziehen möchte, sollte nach diesem Release die Fühler ausstrecken. Interessant und packend sind sie auf ihre Art schon, sie zeigen sich als talentierte Band in ihrer Anfangsphase. Wesentlich unkontrollierter und metallischer als auf den folgenden Releases geht es hier intensiv zur Sache. These dudes don´t take anything for serious. "Smell Sweet Smell" is Fear My Thoughts´ answer to their current record "Hell Sweet Hell". I think the devil shouts at these guys and not vice versa. "Smell Sweet Smell" is the compilation of the first two full lengths "23" and "Vitriol", which came out on LetItBurn Records in 2001 and 2002 respectively. I remember listening to "23" over weeks when bought it back then because at that time it was a rather uncommon thing when hardcore bands played metal riffs on a high level and were not just using the Arkangel styled Slayerish riffs all of the time. It must have been around that time when i also saw them live and i´ve actually seen someone in a hardcore bands doing real metal tappings and already at that time the band was extraordinary because both of their guitar players knew how to play guitar and i really mean playing and not just shredding. Ok but back from those old time rants. On "23" the band was obviously trying to find their style and so they were experimenting alot on this one using lots of samples, which i think fit all very well but if you´ve listened to the record alot it was rather annyoing listening 2 minutes to an intro before the actual song started. Back then Lisa Graf played violin for them and was also performing live with them from time to time. "Vitriol" paved the way for their current releases, as the band themselves states in the liner notes. The sound is more metallic, less experimental than on "23", less samples and more straight forward songs. It's still a joy to listen to these songs because what i like about their songwriting back then are these quiet parts which suddenly get interrupted by thrashing metal and are suddenly quiet again. There you could still hear the chaos influences they had earlier. This discography comes with an awesome new layout and artwork, liner notes from the band about their view on these releases now and from which perspective these songs were written back then. As both these releases are sold out I think Chris from LetItBurn made a wise decision putting out this record and showing the origin of this awesome band.

Zu Fear My Thoughts braucht man wohl nicht mehr allzuviel erklären, längst haben sich die Jungs einen hohen Status in der Metalszene erspielt und nicht gerade wenige Fans für sich gewonnen.

Bei "Smell sweet Smell" handelt es sich aber leider nicht um ein neues Album sondern um eine, vom Label sogenannte "Discography CD" die die ersten Beiden Alben von Fear My Thoughts, betitelt "23" und "Vitrol" beinhaltet, eine nette Sachen für Fans die diese beiden Scheiben noch nicht besitzen.

Musikalisch kann mich das Ganze noch nicht so richtig mitreißen wie die neueren Fear My Thoughts Sachen, da liegt schon noch ein Stück dazwischen. Trotzdem waren auch diese beiden Alben spielerisch schon ziemlich ausgezeichnet, vor allem "23" kommt schön düster rüber.

Auch "Vitrol" bietet hervorragenden Metal von dem sich so manche Band eine Scheibe abschneiden könnte, Fear My Thoughts schaffen es stets eine intensive Atmosphäre zu kreieren.

So kann man an diesem Release nicht viel aussetzen, hier stimmt so ziemlich alles und wer die beiden Alben noch nicht sein eigen nennt sollte hier getrost zuschlagen, einen Fehler begeht er damit sicher nicht.

Nach “Hell Sweet Hell” kommt “Smell Sweet Smell”. Logisch, oder? Nein, so billig sieht der Nachfolger der letzen Platte nicht aus. Bei dieser Scheibe, handelt es sich um die Wiederveröffentlichung der ersten beiden Veröffentlichungen der Band. „Vitriol“ und „23“ sind auf ihre Art schon sehr eigenwillig, und zeigen eine sehr talentierte Band in ihrer Anfangsphase und verdeutlichen gut, wie sehr sich die Kombo entwickelt und ihren Stil ausgeprägt hat. Die beiden Platten zeigen die Band hier noch etwas roher, unkontrollierter und metallischer als die nachfolgenden Releases. Rein strukturell und auch vom Riffing können die beiden Platten freilich noch nicht ganz mit den neuen Sachen mithalten, aber man erkennt schon deutlich den Stil der Band und auch die Marschrichtung ist hier angedeutet. Ich finde zwar auch wirklich, dass man mit dem Kauf der beiden Scheiben danach deutlich mehr bekommt, aber wenn es hier „ Vitriol“ und „23“ auf einer Platte zum Preis einer Einzel CD gibt, sehe ich gar keinen Grund, sich das Teil nicht zuzulegen, zumal es hier auch schon das ein oder andere Highlight gibt, das die Band hier abfeuert. Zumal die Band auf den beiden Alben schon deutlich zeigt, wie vielseitig sie bereits in den Jahren 2001 – 2002 waren und das ist schon erstaunlich. Man höre mal das heavy angehauchte „Fear My Thoughts“ von „Vitriol“ oder das starke und vielschichtige „When Will It End” von „23“. Wie gesagt, die Songs haben eher den Charakter eines Rohdiamanten, der noch auf den letzten Schliff wartet. Zusätzliche Bonus Titel gibt es leider keine, so dass der Fan, der die Platten bereits besitzt, bis auf die Liner Notes nichts aufregend Neues bekommt. Ansonsten können aber neue Fear My Thought Fans – solche wie ich, welche bisher nur die beiden neuen Alben kannten - bedenkenlos zuschlagen.

Metalcore, Hardcore, Death or Thrash metal? Well with CD sales, through Lifeforce Records, moving into the 3000 mark does it really matter? Fear My Thoughts are a band to be definitely reckoned with. Riffs and drumming that simply impels you to carry on listening till the final note and cymbal has been hit makes for a very audible album. Though this is no ordinary album; it is a re-release discography album of their “classic” earlier albums; 23 and Vitriol. Note the title of the disco-re-release-album, Smell Sweet Smell, mocking the previous album; Hell Sweet Hell. But I do not mock this album nor the musicians or music. The German based band has brought us, though nothing new, something of a present in
time for Easter. It may not be an egg, but the insides, like that of a Kinder egg, are filled with more goodness than the chocolate ever has managed to give. It is the content rather than the packaging is what I’m trying to say. Fear My Thoughts border on the said genres and though they cannot be categorised into any one of these they have in my heart filled the space of metalcore. Something Caliban has failed to do; they’re horrible live and it’s nothing more than a PR stunt for metalcore in my opinion. But Fear My Thoughts have given us the real deal; music infused with feeling, energy and such technicality that even if you shook Dr. Who’s sonic screwdriver at it, it wouldn’t falter in the slightest.
My impression is that Fear My Thoughts have seen the likes of bands such as Caliban and Heaven Shall Burn and realised that in all honesty, they could give so much more and at a better price. Experience and intelligence in making the music is all that’s needed and Fear My Thoughts have managed that well enough with their albums. And this re-disco-released-hybrid-album has allowed the new age of metalcore listeners into a world they may have never thought existed; the darkest lyrics filled with brutal dental shattering guitar work and lung shuddering bass and drum work.
Fear My Thoughts have given us an album worth a shot and I give it a massive thumbs up. With track after track tearing the previous up into little bits, this album only builds and builds on itself with every listen. The likes of As I Bleed gives us a beautiful riff that only works for Fear My Thoughts, no other can manage the beastly chained notes emanating from the guitars. Other tracks such as Progression fill me with an image of extremely metalled up punk. The intro is very much a punk beat and the verses are almost bordering on My Chemical Romance. This I know from my point of view is heinous but it’s how it sounds. Then it gets better with tracks such as √529 which though dark and intense builds up to one of the best tracks on the album; When Will It End, with excerpts from The Dead Poet’s Society I do believe. Odd to hear Robin Williams talking on a metalcore album; makes me smile somewhat. We are then given a very beautiful chilled short track entitled 9284. just something to lighten the mood and bring it down a little; lighters at the ready people.
If you’re an avid fan of Fear My Thoughts already you will have no need to agree or disagree with what I’ve said. But for all those out there that don’t know Fear My Thoughts I would suggest you grab a copy of this album or indeed any of their previous albums to simply find out for yourself the beauty of the technical musical qualities that Fear My Thoughts present us. Fear My Thoughts, what should I say about these guys, one of Germanies leading Metalcore bands....countless gigs and constant touring. Smell Sweet Smell is a re-relaese of two long time sold out albums ("Vitriol" and "23")...and Let It Burn Records did good in releasing this CD, cause I think for die hard fans of Fear My Thoughts it´s really interesting to hear what the band did before they changed to Lifeforce Records. Compared to the latest releases of Fear My Thoughts the music is more experimental on Smell Sweet Smell and the vocals are more raw and brutal...I highly recommend this album.

Die meisten von euch wird die Truppe "Fear my Thoughts" aus Rheinfelden ein Begriff sein. Den wenigsten jedoch sollte bekannt sein was FMT vor ihrer Lifeforce Records Deübt "The Great Collapse" musikalisch so getrieben haben ! Nimmt Einblick in die Zeit vor "The Great Collapse". Smell Sweet Smell 2001-2002 lautet der Titel und beinhaltet die beiden ersten Album "23" und "Vitriol" die über Let It Brun records veröffentlicht wurden.

Die ersten Songs sind eine Mischung aus gediegenen Neurosis und Isis Spheren und Chords und Converge vergleichbaren Chaos Touch. Beim Song 3 kommt aber schon klar der Sound zum vorschein den man von "The Great Collapse" kennt, zumindest weis man wo es hingeht. Der vierte Songs ist wieder etwas ganz gediegenes alla Cult of Luna mit einem karakteristischen Pink Floyd Sound. Bei Song 5 und 6 geht es dann heftig zur Sache und hier ist geballte Power, melodic Gitarren Riffs und einem Touch Chaotic. Ab dem 7 Songs geht es dann schon mehr Metal-Mässig und gradliniger ab. Der Song schient so etwas wieder wie ein Widmung Ihrer Roots zu sein, ganz dem Thema "True to the Metal - 666". Aber beim folgenden Song kommen dann am anfang die Chaotic Hardcore zum vorschein, im weiteren Abluf des Song zeigen sich FMT schleppend und Screamo-Mässig mit vielen kleinen Details Attacken und Breaks in alle Facetten mit Metal und Grind Touch. Auf jeden Fall kommt hier schon die metallische Ader zum vorschein.

Ich will jetzt nicht auf jeden Song eingehen, das sprecngt den Rahmen. Aber man merkt direkt das hier sehr viel Vielfalt im Spiel ist und Fear my Thoughts ein grosse Spektum an Metal und Hardcore sowie melodischen und chaotischen Einflüssen in sich trägt. After their new album "Hell Sweet Hell" (summer of 2005 Lifeforce Records) Fear My Thoughts come back with "Smell Sweet Smell", a sort of "the best of" featured of their first two albums “23” (2001) and ”Vitriol” (2002), so the production before the "Lifeforce Era". This awesome package is out on the well known Munich based hc label Let It Burn Records, which own an heavy roster formed by metal-hardcore bands famous in the European scene like Awoken, Scars Of Tomorrow, Kersey and Final Prayer.
Fear My Thoughts sounds (as always) clear, original and easily recognizable since their beginning (also after 10 years on the scene, cling to their own style): an explosive mix of chaotic hardcore and the new heaviness of metal played with an unbelievabe technical knowledge of each instrument. For who never heard before of them Fear My Thoughts can be compared on the way of Mastodon, Remission and In Flames, blending death(trash) metal with swedish stuff and typical metalcore breakdowns. "Smell Sweet Smell" shows already Fear My Thoughts premium style and their natural-born attitude charachterized by an highway sound, which one evolved a lot during this years catching excellent proofs and bringing an excellent creativity. I'm not very much fine about the voice (that's the only one small critic about "Smell Sweet Smell") 'cause it sounds always the same...i like it more in "Hell Sweet Hell", because it's alternated with melodies, so sounding more good and free of any flat moments; that's nothing serious as well guys, don't worry!!! Together with Caliban and Heaven Shall Burn, Fear My Thoughts are one of the most consolidated metal-hardcore bands in Europe. I saw them live on 2005 in Padova (Italy)...their shows are devastating attacks, trust me. Definetly recommended to everyone wants know more about the early discography of Fear My Thoughts: buy or die!!!

Mit der letzten FEAR MY THOUGHTS-Scheibe bin ich immer noch nicht so richtig warm geworden, aber trotzdem ist die Band für mich eine der besten deutschen Metal(core)-Combos. Das sehen Century Media bekanntlich ähnlich und haben sich die Jungs ins Haus geholt. Let It Burn Records nahmen die Zäsur in der Bandgeschichte zum Anlaß, die ersten beiden (mittlerweile vergriffenen) Alben der Jungs auf eine Scheibe zu packen und dem interessierten Fan so die Möglichkeit zur Sammlungs-Komplettierung zu geben. Auf „Smell Sweet Smell“ finden sich also die beiden LEB-Veröffentlichugnen „Vitriol“ und das Debüt „23“, verpackt in ein schickes buntes neues Artwork. Ich schätze mal, dass die beiden Alben auch noch mal neu gemastert worden, jedenfalls ist der Sound ober-amtlich. Zu ihren Anfangszeiten waren FEAR MY THOUGHTS noch deutlich metallischer und besonders beim Gesang richtig aggressiv. Die Gitarren hatten auch damals schon ordentlich melodische Riffs und das Songwriting war erstklassig, das beweisen Kracher wie „Words Can’t Express“ oder das echt true-as-fuckige „Fear My Thoughts“. Die Scheiben können sich locker mit aktuellen Veröffentlichungen messen und präsentieren FEAR MY THOUGHTS als eine Band, die schon immer viel Talent hatte. somit ist das Re-Release nicht nur für Die Hard-Fans interessant, sondern genenerell für jeden Death Metal-Fan lohnenswert. Grundsätzlich versuche ich ja, ein Album - egal welchen Genres - als Soundtrack eines imaginären Films zu sehen. Fear My Thoughts haben mir dieses Unterfangen mit „Smell Sweet Smell“ anfangs nicht unbedingt leicht gemacht, sich aber hartnäckig festgebissen. Erst nach dem dritten Durchlauf der Scheibe lief in meinem Hirn letztendlich ein (allerdings verstörender) schwarzweißer Streifen ab. Und zwar über eine Nervenheilanstalt, in der auch schwere Hautkrankheiten behandelt werden. Warum auch immer…. Dennoch, - HOLY SHIT! - dieser Film hat durchaus seinen Charme. Vor allem, wenn man realisiert, dass sich unter der grindigen, schreienden Fassade ein menschliches Individuum verbirgt. Diese Erkenntnis stellt sich spätestens ab Song 5 ein. Dann nämlich, wenn der Sänger alle Facetten seiner bis dato ausschließlich im „Angestochenen-Ferkel-Bereich“ agierenden Stimme auf den Tisch legt. Die brüchigen, cleanen Passagen erinnern an die großartigen Mercyful Fate und King Diamond, wenn dieser mal nicht den Eunuchen gibt.

Das kommt nicht von ungefähr, sondern spiegelt die enorme Entwicklung wieder, die Fear My Thoughts in den letzten Jahren vollzogen haben. Schließlich ist „Swell sweet Smell“ eine Dokumentation der frühen Jahre (2001 - 2002) dieser Band mit den Klassikern der längst ausverkauften Alben „23“ und „Vitriol“. Mittlerweile spielt die Band eh in einer anderen Liga zusammen mit solchen Kalibern wie Caliban.

„Smell Sweet Smell“ ist ein anspruchsvolles Tondokument, dem man sich ohne Vorurteile öffnen muss. Wenn es so etwas wie positive Aggression gibt, so wird sie in diesem Werk manifestiert. Die Gitarristen weben Klangteppiche, deren ständig wechselnde Muster den Zuhörer nahezu schwindelig machen, aber gerade deswegen einfangen. „Smell Sweet Smell“ ist ein komplexes Konstrukt, das Dich dazu bringt, beim Headbangen nachzudenken und zu versuchen, den nächsten Schachzug der listigen Musikanten zu erahnen. Und dass die Songs, obwohl schon ein paar Tage alt, immer noch auf der Höhe der Zeit agieren, spricht für großartiges Songwriting und eine hervorragende Produktion. Death-/Metalcore trifft den Stil der Band am ehesten, ist jedoch nur die halbe Wahrheit.

Ich habe selten beim Hören einer CD so oft die Meinung gewechselt, wie diesmal. Letztendlich ist genau das der Ritterschlag für die Combo, der ich alles Gute und Glück dieses Planeten inklusive Vor- und Haupthölle wünsche: Bei Sonnenschein klingen sie wie die personifizierte Provokation, bei trübem Wetter wie die Bestätigung des unterschwelligen Verdachts, dass auch einiges Scheiße ist auf unserer schönen, blauen Erde.

Before releasing 2 real metal albums on Lifeforce, Fear My Thoughts released on Let it Burn. Still sounding a bit different, these great records are now available again on one CD. Before showing you the original reviews from back in these days, we should take a look on what has changed. Already flirting with metal, but surely not being that metal powerhouse that they are today, these 2 releases are showing the band in a different light. More chaotic, less focused but therefore more open minded to a rather unique sound, FMT already showed their great talent. Strange melodies, ideas like the violins that pop up quite often, sung passages, disharmonies and really complex chaotic parts are only some of the elements they had back then, and which are not really visible anymore these days. More new school and core is still visible. This release is great to show the progression of this interesting band, and you should close the gaps in your collection when dig their newer stuff.

Some of you may remember that we tried to convince you with showing the debut of FMT on our frontpage some months ago, it was a good innovative metallic HC now, they are back, delivering their follow up and showing that they still got better over the past months. As I already have them in mind for delivering quite mature songs with a good technical claim, they followed their path and reached another level with this. Complex, technical, yet floating and not too exhausting metallic hardcore with good musicianship and a nice voice, delivering some good diversity is the essence of these 7 songs (32 min. long). Fast metallic riffing is one of the main stylistic element on here, and goes hand in hand with some moshing beats that are sometimes flowing into more complicated, a little bit off beat and therefore Botch-esque structures, without annoying through interrupting the flow of the record. Their singer is sounding energetic and manages to avoid sounding boring through adapting some different techniques here and there. As on their debut, they still to cross borders, with introducing a violine to their music, which sounds out of place, but if you hear it fits into the music really well! Production and artwork are on a highest level as well. Funny bonus song as well, and a stupid outro (does anyone know “Helge Schneider”?). If you ever liked a release of Ferret, Good Fellow or similar labels, THIS is your summer smashhit on a high quality level.

These guys completely convinced me when I saw them at this years festival in the Czech republic, and therefore I was really excited to listen how they sound on their record. Fear my thoughts, coming from Germanies south, including a swiss member as well play some hectic metallic hardcore with a lot of different influences and many fresh ideas. After the Blair Witch intro (is it BWP? I think so...) the first song unfolds as some hectic metalmosh including some of these math-elements I always like to hear. But if think that's it you are wrong. Within the following songs they not only show you how to put emotions into this music, they also shine with a real talented musicianship. That fast part after the intro of song No.4 is really great. I think this young band may deliver the new wind the kinda worn out metalcore genre needs. Get this, you will like it.

Machen wir es kurz: FEAR MY THOUGHTS konnten im letzten Jahr mit ihrem vierten Album "Hell Sweet Hell" reihenweise gute Kritiken einfahren und das auch zu recht. Was die Band macht, das macht sie gut. Nur leider ist das nicht so wirklich mein Ding.
Mit "Smell Sweet Smell" gibt es jetzt eine Wiederveröffentlichung des ersten Albums "23" und des Nachfolgers "Vitriol". Musikalisch gibt es chaotischen Hardcore, der an zahmere CONVERGE oder alte/mittelalte EIGHTEEN VISIONS erinnert, vor allem, wenn im Midtempo losgewalzt wird. Keinesfalls schlecht, aber auch nicht so richtig packend. Die ruhigeren Passagen mit Violine sind zwar mal was anderes, klingen aber zu unspektakulär.
Bei den härteren Passagen tauchen immer wieder coole Riffs und Melodien auf, nur sind die Songs als solches nicht ausgereift genug, um die Ideen auch in einen sinnvollen Kontext zu stellen. Oder anders gesagt: Es bleibt nichts hängen. Einzige Ausnahme ist die Bandhymne 'Fear My Thoughts' ein kultiger Metalkracher, inklusive Oh-Oh-Oh-Chören. Interessant ist das Album eigentlich nur, weil es die Entwicklung der Band sehr schön verdeutlicht, denn musikalisch ist es leider nur guter Durchschnitt.
Wer also mal hören will, wie seine Faves angefangen haben, das ist euer Album, der Rest braucht das überhaupt nicht.

Es ist immer ein tolles Gefühl, wenn man eine CD für sich entdeckt und sie einfach nicht mehr aus dem Player nehmen will, weil man sich von dem Meisterwerk nicht trennen kann. Umso erfreulicher ist das bei der mir vorliegenden CD "Vitriol", da die Band, die diese herausragende Werk komponiert hat, dem deutschen Underground - genauer Rheinfelden - zugehörig ist. Was das Labelinfo lapidar als Einflüsse angibt, nämlich Converge, Shai Hulud, At the Gates, Slayer, The Haunted, [...], manifestiert sich auf der aktuellen Scheibe der Rheinfelder zu einer ergreifende Symphonie aus geballter Power, wundervollen Melodiebögen, brillianten Breaks und sperrigen - aber dennoch zugängigen - Arrangements. Mit fazinierender Leichtigkeit leiten, anfänglich unter Umständen als holprig empfundene, Breaks von sich wiederholenden Hardcore Shouts in tonnenschwere Schweden Death Riffs über, um im nächsten Moment in schräg verzerrtes Gitarrenspiel und kurz darauf in ruhige, mit Violinenspiel unterlegte Melodien aufzugehen. Ähnlich wie die Kollegen von Unearth kann man Fear My Thoughts mit ihrem aktuellen Album als MetalCore kategorisieren, doch kommt "Vitriol" dabei ungleich vielschichtiger aus den Boxen. Auch wenn es die Band schafft die besten und vielleicht interessantesten Aspekte von Bands wie At the Gates, In Flames, Slayer, Converge, Boy Sets Fire, ... in ihre Songs einfließen zu lassen, so ist sie von einem Plagiat meilenweit entfernt - zu eigenständig und kreativ ist das Album und die Lieder in sich aufgebaut. Den Rheinfeldern ist mit ihrer aktuellen CD ein Kunststück gelungen; einerseits bewegt man sich fernab von massenkompatiblen Pfaden - dazu sind die Einflüsse und vor allem deren Umsetzung mit ihren teils starken Kontrasten innerhalb der Songs zu facettenreich - andererseits kann man sich der Anziehungskraft der Lieder wegen ihrer fließenden und intelligenten Umsetzung kaum erwehren. Wenn das verstörend wirkende Intro "Aponia" mit bestem At the Gates Riffing in "6 Billion Mirrors" übergeht, das sich erst in Form von bösartigen Hardcore Growls, subversiven Hintergrundgemurmel und monotonem Gitarrenspiel dem Hörer verweigert, plötzlich abflaut, in verzweifeltem Gesang und sehnsüchtigen Melodiebögen wieder anzieht, hernach in wütendem Hardcore gipfelt, um mit "A New Enlightenment must come to find out what matters" allen In Flames Fans die Tränen in die Augen zu treiben. Das Wechselbad der Gefühle setzt sich mit dem Instrumetal Stück "Ataraxia" fort, das die Stimmung eines Herbstmorgens nach durchzechter Nacht in mir Aufsteigen lässt. Mit "Fear My Thoughts" als Abschlusstrack zeigt man sich dann letztendlich noch von der Metaller Seite und lässt Thomas Rosenmerkel (ex-Destruction) noch einen recht coolen, und sich selbst nicht allzu ernst nehmenden, Heavy Metal Kracher vom Stapel. Da es immer ein wenig schwer ist so kreative, emotionale und vielschichtige Alben wie "Vitriol" ansprechend zu umschreiben, würde ich jedem dringenst empfehlen dieses Highlight selbst genauer anzuhören.

Fear My Thoughts - Vitriol MCD (Let it Burn Records) This is the stuff I was waiting for. Fear My Thoughts impressed me a lot on cd with their full length '23' and their live performance. These guys know very well how to handle their instruments and know how to use this talent to make some very technical intense metallic evil music. Compared to their latest full length F.M.T. sounds even more metallic, the slowed down clean parts are taken out of their sound. Fortunately, they still know how to create very diverse songs, which will take your attention all the time. The coolest thing is that the violin is still presented in the new songs, which add a lot to the specific F.M.T. sound. Mix Converge, Botch, Maiden and numerous other great bands, add a violin and this beautiful evil beast called F.M.T. is born. To top this great release off they finish with a melodic metallic song which is all about being true to the metal, which these guys have proven to be again with this great release. This is one of the best European releases of the last few years for sure.

The U.S. has seen the melodic metal/hardcore mix blossom into a small musical renaissance, so it comes as no surprise than as with most musical phenomena, Europe follows suite, which is actually a reverse in trends, as the U.S. is normally the one a few years behind. So, here come Germany's FearMyThoughts, with their second full-length album riding hard the current U.S. bandwagon of melodi-death-core, in the vein of Dead to Fall, Unearth, Evergreen Terrance and countless others. It contains all the requisites that have been laid down by the swarm of U.S. bands; breakdowns, sharp dual guitars, a slight sense of Swedish melody and hardcore vocals. However, where FearMyThoughts are a little different from the horde, is the inclusion of some very haunting David Fincher (Aliens III, Seven) soundscapes, samples and interludes. Add to that, the music itself also has a far darker, creepy vibe (maybe from their inherent Rammstein/German heritage), and some more emotional structures more akin to From Autumn to Ashes, and you have something that sounds familiar without completely retreading new ground. The songs are far less immediate than many of their U.S. peers, they are drawn out, deep, and the melody teeters on a psychotic ambience rather than short bursts of fist-raising anthems and mosh-friendly breakdowns. It starts with a brief intro called "Aponia" that sets the listener up for an oncoming industrial assault, with various buzzing samples, spoken words and haunting piano line - very unorthodox, but effective. Then the nearly seven minute "6 Billion Mirrors" dances from the speakers with more traditional dual attack guitar harmonies, but soon reverts to a more Teutonic thrash-inspired outing. It also includes some very discordant, reverb-laced guitar work that's off-putting yet powerful, but all of a sudden it breaks into one of the many acoustic/atmospheric soundscapes, which set this album apart. Even when the guitars do kick in, they are lamenting and grating at the same time. This song in itself displays FearMyThoughts' otherworldly grasp of hardcore and how to not be predictable. Add to that, the effective violin use, and it essentially breaks the mold for what hardcore traditionally stands for. And that's just the first song. The more traditional "A New Enlightenment Must Come to Find Out What Matters" follows with more by-the-numbers emotive hardcore, but with Unearth-like intricacies and structures. Another eerie interlude in the form of "Ataraxia" then flows into "Nothing That Could Be Compared". This song is a stunning display of varying tempos and emotions that frankly was slightly unsettling, strange for a song to effect me emotionally in this way. It's constantly unpredictable, morphing and shifting from string-backed dirge to more expected galloping melodies and heartfelt vocals - as psychologically effective as I've heard in a long time across all genres. Of course, trying to follow that mammoth song up is a pointless task, but "As I Bleed" offers seven minutes of more high quality, sonically disturbing aggressive discordance. Not as sublimely effective as the prior song, it's more of an aural mugging; not really subtle or evocative, just painful. It also shows FearMyThoughts' album long resistance to be sucked into the world of "whisper/shout, leave the ground" breakdowns. It does end though with two minutes of more traumatizing samples. After such a gushing review so far, it then should come as no surprise, then album ends a rather down note. After the challenging efforts of the prior songs FearMyThoughts decide to close with what I can consider a joke song that while is a traditional heavy metal homage of sorts, paying respects to Priest, Maiden and others. It simply left me scratching my head in dumbfounded confusion. Add the odd hidden track that consists of gruff yelling, that I can only attribute to German humor, and it comes close to wiping out the brilliance of the actual material. My only other gripe is the length; with only four real songs as such, this could almost be a mini-album, and I simply was left wanting more. I had no real issues with the production; it wasn't the cliched chunky bass heavy hardcore sound, but edgier and gritty. FearMyThoughts is a surprisingly good European entry into the U.S. dominated hardcore arena, and it easily shows up the lethargic and predictable rambling of Shattered Realm or Until The End. The inclusion of genre bending, unsettling elements and emotional structures, easily make it a release that puts them close to Unearth for sheer quality, and one to keep a close, tear-encrusted eye on. Aus deutschem Lande soll die Band kommen? Die Frage stellte ich mir als erstes, nachdem ich die 7 Track Cd in meinen Player eingelegt hatte. So etwas kannte ich bis zum heutigen Tage eigentlich nur aus dem Amerikanischen & Skandinavischen Bereich. Immer wieder ertappte ich mich bei dem Gedanken, mit welchen Bands ich Fear My Thought vergleichen könnte. At the gates/Converge/Neurosis/Burnt by the sun....u.v.m! Obwohl viele Einflüsse der genannten Bands bei Fear my thoughts vertreten sind, bleiben sie aber dennoch eigenständig. Unglaublich wie sie derart verschiedene Elemente in ihre Musik einbauen. Von melodischen Metalpassagen bis hin zum vertrackten Hardcorepart. Das ganze wird noch mit einer Violine und einigen Soundsampels untermalt, die nicht aufdringlich wirken. Ein absolut harmonisches Wechselspiel zwischen heftigen Gitarrenriffs und atmosphärischen ruhigen Klängen. Was auch positiv zum Gesamtbild der "Vitriol" passt, ist der aggressive Gesangsstil von Leadsänger Mathias, der es gut versteht, seine Stimme dann einzusetzen, wenn es angebracht ist. Eine kleine musikalische & textliche Änderung gibt es allerdings noch beim 7. Song "Fear my thoughts". Hier wird in bester Manier die True Metalschiene gefahren. EX-Destruction Sänger Thomas Rosenmekel unterstützt diesen Song mit seinem Gesang und gibt dabei mit der witzigen lyrischen Seite dem ganzen den richtigen Glanz. Der Song ist jetzt schon Kult! Fazit: Bei "Vitriol" stimmt vom Coverlayout bis zu den Texten einfach alles. Hier wird ganz großes Tennis gespielt. Respekt!

This German band was formed in 1997, after some Demo's, a MCD and a debut album Called "23".Vitriol is the next step forward in their musical career. Very Technical guitar work, combined with screaming vocals and technical hard-hitting drums. Organized Chaos is the best phrase to describe FEARMYTHOUGHTS. An interesting Album for both Metal, Punk and Hardcore dudes. The changes in Tempo and the knowledge of the way to play their instruments, separates FEARMYTHOUGHTS from so many other bands. This is the one of the best and original bands in today's metal/hardcore/punk scene. The guest appearance of the Ex-Destruction singer, Thomas Rosenmerkel is a little Peak for me personally on the album. For the rest: Keep up the good > work !!!

Wenn sich Emotion, Leidenschaft und Aggression in der Musik vermischt, so dies gibt meiner Meinung nach, das was einem der Alltag tagtäglich verbirgt: Tiefe. Es fühlt sich so gut an, in ein Wechselbad der Gefühle geworfen zu werden um danach völlig durchnässt und erschöpft wieder an die Oberfläche zu gelangen. Das ist pures Leben. So fühlte es sich an, als ich zum ersten Mal FEAR MY THOUGHTS im heimischen CD-Player hatte. Die Musiker aus dem Süden der Republik haben es einfach drauf, Songs zu schreiben, die tief gehen. Die Tiefe und Schwermütigkeit wärmt wie NEUROSIS, die noisigen Riffs und das Drumming klingen wie eine zugänglichere Version von CONVERGE und die Leads und melodischen Gitarrenriffs sind in allerbester schwedischer Manier gehalten. Wenn euch jetzt noch nicht das Wasser im Mund zusammenläuft so kann ich euch auch nicht mehr helfen. Die Arrangements sind allesamt komplex, aber nachvollziehbar und fesseln den Hörer jedesmal ein bisschen mehr. Die geschickt eingesetzte Dynamik, das leise Zwischenspiel "Ataraxia", das durchdacht in den besten Song dieser Mini, "Nothing that Could Be Compared" übergeht und die, leider sehr spärlich, eingesetzte Violine, die ebenfalls Erinnerung an NEUROSIS wach werden lässt und abwechslungsreicher Schrei- und Kreischgesang fügen sich hervorragend in die originelle Musik ein. Abschließend gibt es noch den Song "Fear My Thoughts" zu hören, der wirklich aus der Reihe tanzt und zeigt, dass diese musikalisch und textlich ernste Band doch ein breites Grinsen in Gesicht haben kann. Dieses Stück ist eine gelungene True Metal-Parodie, mit einem richtig witzigem Text und True Metal-Vocals, die ausnahmsweise nicht zum Davonlaufen sind. Selbst, wenn es den Hörer etwas verwirren mag, dieser Song ist zum schreien! Aber auch für die anderen Songs gilt das Prädikat "besonders wertvoll" und ich lege jedem Hörer, der an BETWEEN THE BURIED AN ME gefallen gefunden hat, diese CD wärmstens ans Herz. Klar, "Vitriol" ist weit weniger kompliziert, aber haut fast genauso rein. Leute, unterstützt diese junge Band und helft ihnen, damit sie nicht im Sumpf der Veröffentlichungen untergeht. Ich habe sie bereits in mein Herz geschlossen.

Das Fear My Thoughts hier schon wieder mit einer neuen CD kommen kann nur gutes heißen. Dieses Mal bekommen wir 7 neue Lieder die noch technischer, noch ausgereifter und vor allem noch mehr Metal sind als 23 es schon war. Das die über 70 Liveshows die die Jungs bisher hingelegt haben ihnen sehr gut getan haben erwähne ich hier nur am Rande, aber was die Rheinfelden Crew hier hingelegt hat ist das wohl beste was sie bisher geschrieben und veröffentlich haben. Die Texte sind noch etwas direkter und politischer geworden, aber anders kennt man es von Mathias dem Sänger eigentlich garnicht. Fear my Thoughts sind eben eine Band die eine Meinung haben und sich nicht scheuen diese auch zu verbreiten. Mit großem erfolg wie man sich denken kann denn die Band wird auch auf dem diesjährigen Ieperfest in Belgien vertreten sein. Ich denke es ist alles gesagt, kauft FEAR MY THOUGHTS!

Their first release "23" was a burner, but with "vitriol" South German band Fear My Thoughts have improved their unique style. Another level, could it be any better? No. There are 7 songs on it and the first song, in my opinion the "weakest" one, already blows my head away :) Great 80th metal intro ala Iron Maiden and then a heavy off-beat chugga chugga mosh break followed by some heavy intense "slow" shit... brilliant! The rest of the songs are even better a good combination of Swedish Metal riffs, moshy parts, Shai-Huludish melodies, fast paced. Great musicians, very very high skilled, very Metal. The last song called "Fear My Thoughts" is one masterpiece of true metal, I`m not sure if it is a coversong, even the singing style is 80th Metal... They learned to mosh! Respect. This release on Let It Burn Records is just perfect, one of the best releases this year so far...Download "As I Bleed" in our Mp3 section... ur ein Jahr nach ihrem Debüt legen FEAR MY THOUGHTS ihren zweiten Longplayer vor, der wiederum sieben Songs beinhaltet. "Vitriol" beginnt mit einem langen Intro (zweieinhalb Minuten), das von Beginn an den besonderen Anspruch der Band klarstellt. Man soll sich mit der Scheibe beschäftigen und das ist auch ratsam. Von seiner Anlage her ist dieser zweite Longplayer ein stückweit komplexer als sein Vorgänger. Die schnellen, abgedrehten Chaos-Parts stehen jetzt noch deutlicher neben den ruhigeren, melodischen Passagen. Der Metal-Anteil scheint ausgeweitet und um dominant eingesetzte 80er Trash-Anleihen erweitert. Disharmonien passen sich hervorragend ein und auch die Violine bereichert noch immer die unglaubliche Soundfülle. Vor allem die bedächtigen Passagen bezeugen den ungeheuren Reifeprozess von FEAR MY THOUGHTS. Die abgedrehtesten Tempo-Passagen scheinen ganz bewusst hinter die ruhigsten Parts des Albums gestellt zu sein. Besser kann man New School- Sound wohl nicht mehr spielen. Die handwerklich stark anspruchsvollen Tracks sind perfekt arrangiert und vom Klangbild her unglaublich vielfältig. Das zieht sich bis in die verwendeten Samples hinein. Ohne Übertreibung spielt das Sextett in einer eigenen Liga, auch wenn Vorlieben für Converge, Botch, Shai Hulud, At The Gates oder auch The Haunted unüberhörbar sind. Die eigenen Arrangements der verwendeten Einflüsse sind entscheidend und gerade hier gehen FEAR MY THOUGHTS unkonventionelle Wege. Der New School- Background der Band ist mit seinen Breaks, dem Mosh und vor allem dem hasserfüllt schreienden Shouter noch immer dominant, doch bis in den richtigen Metal hinein scheint es nicht mehr weit zu sein. Gerade der letzte Track 'Fear My Thoughts' ist schon ein astreine Metal-Hymne. Ex- Destruction Sänger Thomas Rosenmerkel tritt hier als Gast in Erscheinung und der Song rockt ohne Ende. Ohne Untertreibung ist "Vitriol" eine der besten Platten des Jahres.

Das ist jetzt das zweite Album dieser grandiosen deutschen Band, und, werte Leserschaft, wenn jetzt nicht endlich alle kapieren was für talentierte Musiker hier am Werke sind verliere ich wirklich meinen Glauben an die deutsche Hardcore-Szene. Natürlich ist das alles andere als leicht verdaulicher Stoff - rasender Metal, chaotischer Hardcore und wüstes Geschrei bilden hier schließlich das Fundament. Aber daneben gibt es im verborgenen schlummernde Melodien die einem nach der Lärm-Katharsis wach küssen und sanfte Gitarrenklänge, die die zerschundenen Ohrmuscheln nach dem Hörsturz wieder sanft einlullen. Mal klingt das verdammt wie die grandiosen Darkest Hour, dann blinkt der Name Converge hell und klar auf, und einen Moment später weiß man ob der musikalisch vielseitigen und dennoch homogenen Mischung plötzlich keinen passenden Vergleich mehr - und das ist wohl das beste Zeichen überhaupt. Denn daran wird deutlich, dass diese Jungs keine Vergleiche mehr brauchen und für sich selber stehen - und wie viele Hardcore-Bands können das heutzutage noch?

Das Chaos hält Einzug in Rheinfelden! Nach ihrem grandiosen Erstling "23", folgt nun nach nicht allzu langer Zeit der würdige Nachfolger zu einer der besten Platten des vergangenen Jahres. "Vitriol" setzt dort an, wo der Vorgänger aufhörte und möbelt den Sound der Band noch mal gehörig auf! Technisch versierter, verwirrender, schlichtweg besser kommen die sieben Songs dieser CD daher und der wohl größte Unterschied zu "23": Viiiiiieeeell mehr Metal in dem Dingen enthalten! Und das ist verdammt gut so! Songs wie "6 Billion Mirrors" oder "Ataraxia" haben zum einen relativ komische Namen, zum anderen gehören die Stücke zu den besten Sachen der letzten Zeit! Zudem ist mit "Fear MY Thoughts" ein absoluter Hit vertreten, der sich doch stark an den Göttern MAIDEN anlehnt - aber was soll's?! Hörenswert ist auch sicherlich das Gesabbel der Band am Schluss dieses Songs, der darauf schließen lässt, das die Jungs eine Menge Spaß (oder Alkohol) beim Aufnehmen der Platte gehabt haben müssen. Für Leute, die immer andere Bands zum Vergleichen haben müssen, versuche ich dem Ganzen mal mit einigen linguistischen Kapriolen beizukommen: CONVERGE meets BOTCH meets AT THE GATES vs. IRON MAIDEN feat. SHAAI HULUD! Für alle, die damit jetzt rein gar nichts anfangen können, formuliere ich es einfacher: Diese Scheibe kickt Arsch - zugreifen!

Schon der Vorgänger "23" von Fear my thoughts war ein Meisterwerk, jetzt meldet sich die Deutsch/Schweizerische Band eindrucksvoll zurück. Auf Let it burn Records erschienen, vermag "Vitriol" vom Anfang bis zum Ende zu überzeugen. Sieben Songs irgendwo im leeren Raum zwischen Emo, Hardcore und Metal, gefüllt mit ganz viel Kreativität und auf hohem musikalischem Niveau. Ruhigere Momente wechseln sich ab mit klassischem Metal, dann wieder durchsetzt von emotionalem Geschrei oder kurzen Moshparts. Nicht zuletzt auch der Schweizer Beitrag zu dieser CD, die Violine von Lisa macht das ganze noch eigenständiger als es eh schon ist. Selbstverständlich bei so einer Band, wird auch bei der Produktion nichts dem Zufall überlassen. Viele schöne Intros und Outros betten die einzelnen Songs ein in ein hervorragendes Ganzes. Dargeboten wird das ganze in top durchdesignter Artwork mit abstrakten Bildern und grafischem Minimalismus. Die Texte machen bei diesem künstlerischen Ansatz ebenfalls keine Ausnahme. Viel lyrisches, fast schon philosophisches, das Spielraum lässt für eigene Interpretationen, genau so wie ein Instrumental Track. ("Ataraxia") Ganz zum Schluss findet sich erstmals auf CD ihre "Hommage an den wahren Heavy Metal", die allen, die Fear my thoughts bereits mal live sahen, als Singalong Hit in Erinnerung sein sollte. Der Titel mit dem "speziellen" Namen "Fear my thoughts" ist für die Band untypisch einfach und simpel gestrickt, dafür kann auch jeder nach dem ersten Refrain die "oohhhs" mitgrölen.... Kurzum ein absolutes Meisterwerk! Sollte man sich unbedingt genehmigen!

Nach ihrem verdammt guten Debut "23" war ich mehr als gespannt auf den als "Vitriol" veröffentlichten Nachfolger des schwäbischen Moshcore-Expresses. Und siehe da: Die Qualität ihrer letztjährigen EP können Fear My Thoughts sogar noch toppen. Mit Superlativen möchte man sich ja gerne zurückhalten, aber die Art und Weise, wie sich FMT in den letzten Jahren entwickelt haben, ist beachtenswert. Ob beabsichtigt oder nicht: Man kann ohne Probleme einen künstlerischen Gehalt in der Musik ausmachen, der weit über das übliche Mosh-Metal Gebolze hinausgeht, was man sonst zu hören bekommt. Metallerischer Hardcore, der nicht davor zurückschreckt, mit Samples und Geräuschen (!) zu spielen und damit sehr tief gehende Sound-Bilder zu erzeugen. Das Zusammenspiel dieser Elemente mit "klassischen" Hardcore-Songs paßt wie die Faust aufs Auge. "Atraxia" ist sehr athmosphärisch, wogegen das folgende "nothing that could be compared" wieder richtig einen auf die Glocke zimmert. Davon dürfen sich andere Kapellen gerne eine Scheibe abschneiden, denn es erhöht nicht nur die Langzeitwirkung ihrer Songs um Längen sondern bekommt sogar noch ein Sternchen hinter das prädikat "einfallsreich". Wenn in den FMT-Songs (wie beirets auf "23" gut gelöst) eine ruhige Geige in die Hintergrundbeschallung mit einstimmt, dann hebt sich die Band dank dieses Wiedererkennungseffekts locker von vielen anderen Hardcore-Bands ab. Was mir ein bißchen fehlt ist die Vertextlichung dieses Gitarrenbretts. Auszugsweise könnten die FMT-Lyrics für sich allein genommen auch bei einer 7-Seconds Platte auftauchen. Das traurige und wütende Dreh-Moment darf gern noch mehr rotieren, dann sitzen wir vollends im gleichen Boot!

"das debutalbum "23" von FEAR MY THOUGHTS gehörte für mich zu den großen überraschungen des letzten jahres. die band aus rheinfelden verknüpfte wie selbstverständlich hardcore-, metal- und noise-zitate zu einem logisverdammt eigenwilligen ganzen. mit "vitriol" heben die sechs ihren sound auf die nächste stufe. verbesserter sound, todschickes artwork und songs, die die bandeigenen extreme in alle richtungen erweitern. der opener "6 billion mirrors" mit seinen unglaublichen breaks und noise-attacken rückt FEAR MY THOUGHTS endgültig auf eine stufe mit "relapse/hydra head"-acts der marke BOTCH oder CAVE IN. aber die band läßt sich stilistisch nicht festlegen, schon sekunden später wird in klassischer deathmetal-manier geholzt, was das zeug hält. "ataraxia" ist dann ein ruhiges moment, mit dem der hörer seine verdiente verschnaufpause bekommt. das der song mich an die göttlichen PORTISHEAD erinnert, bilde ich mir wohl nur ein. die dominanz der violine wurde diesmal ein klein wenig zurückgeschraubt, gleichzeitig den elektronischen versatzstücken ein etwas höherer stellenwert eingeräumt. auch wenn mich die vielschichtigkeit von "vitriol" zunächst etwas sprachlos hinterläßt: das material wächst ständig und offenbart seine klasse mit jedem hörversuch ein wenig mehr. einziger kritikpunkt zum schluss: sechs songs (plus ein intro) sind für ein reguläres album etwas zu wenig - auch wenn es die stücke in sich haben. Fear my thoughts haben mit ihrem neuen Album "Vitriol" wohl einen weiteren Sprung nach vorne gemacht. Mit den vielen Einflüssen der unterschiedlichsten Bands wie Botch, At the Gates oder Iron Maiden haben sich Fear my thoughts ihren eigenen Platz in der Old School Szene gesetzt. Die eher moshige Stimme des Sängers harmoniert sehr gut mit den ruhigen Gitarren. Die Gitarren werden sehr in den Vordergrund gestellt und so sind Song eins "Aponia" und Song vier "Ataraxia" fast reine Gitarren Melodien. Unterstützt von den starken Drums bringt der Sänger die politischen Gedanken der Texte gut zum Ausdruck. Plötzlich eintretende, ruhige Gitarren Parts wie in Song fünf "Nothing that could be compared", lassen dem Hörer kleine Pausen , bevor die aggressive Stimmung wieder einsetzt. "Vitriol" hat mehr Power und mehr Metal als das Vorgänger Album "23". Leider hat es auch mehr technische Einflüsse, welche zwar geschickt eingesetzt worden sind, aber trotzdem nicht ganz zu Dem Sound passt. Fear my thoughts bieten uns aufihrem neuen Album "Vitriol" ungefähr zweiunddreißig Minuten volle Ausdrucksstärke und Abwechslung, welche man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte. Finally the third release of Fear my thoughts and the second one on Let it Burn Records. And what the fuck? This record totally convinced me! Since I get this it's heavy rotating in my player. Absolutely crazy chaos metal shit! After a nice and quiet intro the five guys and one girl of Fear my thoughts are starting and I think they are the perfect mix of Converge and early Cave In but with their own special touch! Pure and brutal chaotic metal destruction is combined with atmospheric parts, nice melodic pieces and heavy mosh riffs. One more special thing is that in some songs they're using a violin and the singer is always screaming about social and personal themes. And you gotta listen to their song "Fear my thoughts", it's pretty cool and very funny, I just mention Iron Maiden.Yeah! If you like metal stuff this is a must!

Hoppla, das ist aber alles andere als leichte Kost, die Fear my Thoughts auf ihrem zweiten Album bieten. Musikalisch in ähnlich anspruchsvollen Gefielden wie Messhuggah oder the Dillinger Escape Plan fischend, bemühen sich die Süddeutschen nicht nur um den technischen Aspekt ihrer Kunst, sondern versuchen auch, Genregrenzen aufzuweichen. Die Band benennt unterschiedliche Combos wie Mogwai, Converge, Iron Maiden oder Infales als Einflüsse. Fear my Thoughts gelingt es, all diese Extreme zu einem stimmigen Gesammtbild zusammenzufügen, wodurch sie für mich zum Besten zählen, was zeitgemäßer Hardcore in hießigen Gefielden zu bieten hat. VITRIOL zeigt, dass Intensität nicht immer mit Härte gleichzusetzen ist, denn die immer wieder eingestreuten ruhigen Passagen verbreiten ein Gefühl zwischen wohliger Beklemmung und Melancholie und bielden damit einen angenehmen Kontrast zu den heftigen Parts. Lediglich Sänger Mathias agiert mit seinem nervenzerfetzenden Geschrei hart an der grenze des Erträglichen, doch für seine Texte, die erfolgreich, den Grad zwischen politischem Engagement und persönlichen Erfahrungen Beschreiten, gebührt ihm viel Lob

Two characteristic terms appear in the definition above: Cruel and Bitter - as it will turn out later on both terms are incredible understatements given the cathartic caracter of this evilly grinning metal-core bastard. Lots of classic metal-riffing, some double-bass attacks, sinister samples, wretched vocal-cords and utterly complex song-structures make this pill damn hard to swallow. Fear My Thoughts combine an enormous amount of differnt influences and effects and right after this musical trip you honestly wouldn't want to know what's going on in the heads of those guys. At times the metal-driven sounds are accompanied by violins and that's what made me think of Abhinanda's Rumble release, but that comparison is very vague given the fact that FMT is much crazier and fierce. The recording quality is awesome, the overall layout of the cd plain breathtaking - as I've grown to expect it from Germany's leading force in quality hardcore, namely Let It Burn Records.
The last track called "Fear My Thoughts" is an anthem dedicated to all those who still call hair-helmets and spandex-pants their own - and this classic 80's metal anthem is another prove for the fact that those guys know no boundaries and adds a nice tongue-in-cheek factor to the sinister soundtrack! If metal is dead for you, you won't like this band - or chances are you'll head over to your next second-hand shop for some pitch black spandex pants...
