: I really enjoyed the selftitled debut MCD on Monument, in fact I placed it as one of my top records of 2005. Now, three years later their new MCD arrives. The band have made countless of changes in their line up since the start and the biggest dissapointment was when their old singer left the band. Their original guitarplayer Marcus took over the mic and I knew he could use his throat since he sang in both LAST HOPE and EYES SHUT back in the days. But I really liked the voice of Andreas Schultz and thought that he would be too hard to replace. Well, the first preview of this “new” ANOTHER YEAR could be heard on last years split 7” with DEATH IS NOT GLAMOROUS and I was really blown away! Since then I’ve been waiting for more and here it comes! Three brand new songs plus both tracks from the split are on this piece of wax. If you dig bands like COMEBACK KID and CHAMPION this ep is really worth checking out. We’re still talking fast melodic hardcore and we’re still talking about one of Swedens finest!

The Lifetime influence Oslo, Norway's Death Is Not Glamorous continues to exhibit on their new EP, Undercurrents, is getting a little poppier in nature. There's considerable growth shown here from their promising 2005 demo (recently remastered and reissued stateside by State of Mind Recordings). While the style here is inherently poppy, fast melodic hardcore, the moods are mixed up at least slightly. The moderately more serious and emotional pair of "Foreground" (whose main riff makes it sound like a tribute to Lifetime's "Rodeo Clown") and "Second Step" counteracts nicely to the sardonic and upbeat duo of "The Three C's" and "Bring It Back."

REVIVE
BELIEFS OF AN OLD PAST (CD)

Revive are a French hardcore band who are well-versed in the North American stylings of it all. Beliefs of an Old Past takes typical traits like tempo changes, gang vocals, breakdowns, "whoa"s, and melodic singing and gives them new life...revives them, if you will.
Now that I've filled the cheesy pun quota, I'll reiterate that if you like the fiery nature of Verse and the healthy youth crew melody of bands like Final Fight you should find a lot to like on Beliefs of an Old Past. Despite some absurdly wordy song titles ("Conscience on the Path of No Return," "Ordinary Day Somewhere in the World," "Reflection on Flackening" [seriously, what the fuck is flackening??]), Revive have an otherwise pretty good command of the English language, usually tackling standard hardcore topics but sounding sincere all along.
Standouts include "Ordinary Day Somewhere in the World" and "Conscience on the Path of No Return," where Revive know exactly where to place those gang vocals, and which erupt in short and completely effective bursts. Both songs also mix up the pace wonderfully and march along with a strong but not overbearing intensity. You can tell by these and select others that Revive's songwriting is simply together.
Having been at the game for seven years, Revive make that absolutely clear on Beliefs of an Old Past with a great performance made audible by a great recording. If you don't mind the surprising bits of clean but well-integrated singing, Beliefs of an Old Past should make for a thoroughly enjoyable listen of hardcore punk.
